A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO SELFBUILD

Want to plan your dream home? SelfBuild & Design Editor Ross Stokes offers a beginner's guide to self build, from finding a plot and gaining planning permission, to design and procurement. This is your opportunity to see the overall picture of a self build, and hear about the process in simple terms from start to finish. At the end of the seminar, there'll be the opportunity to question Ross about all the elements you want to know more about.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
SelfBuild & Design Editor Ross Stokes was born and raised in Perth, Australia, where building your own home is considered as normal as beating poms at cricket. He moved to the UK in the 80s and worked briefly in the London building industry before resuming his journalistic career. He has renovated several period properties, and now lives in a converted water mill in Shropshire.
FUNDING YOUR SELF BUILD PROJECT

One of the main hurdles self builders face is finding enough money to keep their project running smoothly. This presentation will give you the low-down on securing - and managing - the funding for your self build or renovation project.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rachel Pyne is the Director of Financial Services at Buildstore, and is CeMAP (Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice) qualified, with 15 years experience in Financial Services. She has worked in Self Build finance for BuildStore for over ten years. During this time, she has worked with a diverse portfolio of mortgage lenders on whole of market and exclusive self build and renovation mortgage products, which are sold both direct and via intermediaries. Rachel was also part of the team that created BuildStore's exclusive Accelerator mortgage.
PASSIVHAUS
Saturday & Sunday @ 12:30pm, with Matt Slader
The seminar will discuss the Hanse Haus Passivhaus - first and foremost a house which achieves outstanding thermal insulation, as well as an extremely low space heating requirement of only 15 kWh per square metre of floor area per annum, producing exceptionally low running costs. Be inspired by Matt, as he talks about a recent Passivhaus build and Hanse Haus' expertise in the field of pre-manufactured house construction.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Matt founded MJS Planning and Design in Teignmouth in 2008 after working in local authority planning since 2003. Following success on a number of projects such as barn conversions, new builds, commercial, agricultural and residential schemes MJS took on responsibility for Design, Planning and Building Regulations for Hanse Haus within the UK Market and were responsible for securing planning permission for the UK's first Hanse Haus Passive Haus in West Somerset.
‘OUTRIGGER’ – SELFBUILD ECOHOUSE CASE STUDY

'Outrigger' is a contemporary dwelling in Cornwall, The Daily Telegraph H & R Award winner 2009. The dwelling is energy efficient, selfbuild procured and designed by Mark Kingsley Architects. This seminar will provide the attendee with an insight into the dwelling's design & construction.

Mark Kingsley is the Director of Mark Kingsley Architects Ltd, Chartered Architect with an MSc in Energy Efficient & Sustainable Building. Mark has designed a number of award winning dwellings & buildings. He is an Environmental Consultant and active Conference Lecturer (Ecobuild & Grand Designs).

You can gain from joining or starting a self build group, even if you are building alone. The seminar will discuss self build associations in general, and the kind of support available from other self builders. More importantly, how self build associations can provide you with key sources of information, and contact to the experts in the field.

Valerie Bearne founded and runs the very popular Build a Dream Self Build Association (which started out as the Bath & District Self Build Association). Members often remark that joining BADSBA was the best thing they did for their self build project.

Robin van der Bij founded specialist design and build company Ecohouse six years ago after developing an obsession with sustainable building whilst designing his own home. Recently appearing on Grand Designs, he has grown something of a reputation as a "green guru" when it comes to home building in Cornwall.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Stephen Smith used to run his own main contracting building company in Dorset and Hampshire. About nine years ago he "came over from the dark side" and began acting directly for clients as their project manager. He says "This enables me to be totally honest in my advice to clients without any hidden, profit driven agendas". He is self taught with many years of experiential training in the field and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute Of Building, which he gained from an Experienced Practitioner Assessment.
